Nellie the Elephant (lyrics only)

The National Zoo is in Washington, DC. The zoo has 7 Asian elephants. They live in a special area called Elephant Trails . How do the zookeepers take care of them?  Elephants need healthy food, exercise, interesting things to do, and attention to their health—just like humans!
Asian elephant habitat has declined by 70 percent during the past 30 years, and presently fewer than 40,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild. Researchers are involved in understanding the decline and in promoting overall elephant health . For example, scientists in the Zoo’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lab  are using satellite imagery and ground studies to quantify habitat loss in various locations in Asia.

Written by Ralph Butler and Peter Hart (1957)

To Bombay
A traveling circus came
They brought an intelligent elephant
And Nellie was her name
One dark night
She slipped her iron chain
And off she ran to Hindustan
And was never seen again

Ooooooooooooo...

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And trundled back to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump

Night by night
She danced to the circus band
When Nellie was leading the big parade
She looked so proud and grand
No more tricks
For Nellie to perform
They taught her how to take a bow
And she took the crowd by storm

The head of the herd was calling
Far, far away
They met one night in the silver light
On the road to Mandalay
So Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trum
Trump, trump, trump

Ooooooooooooo...

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And trundled back to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump, trump, trump
