A rain barrel is a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams. You can purchase or, if you are handy, construct a rain barrel to collect water to use for gardens, flower pots, and car and window washing. Many local agencies also conduct workshops where you can learn to build a barrel.
