NIEHS Response to the World Trade Center
The September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on New York City’s World Trade Center caused large fires. The collapse of the building released tons of dust in that part of New York.
The National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Worker Education Training Program (WETP) acted right away. WETP sent 3,000 respirators to the site. Respirators help protect workers from dust and pollution in the air.
Researchers sponsored by NIEHS were also there to collect samples of air and the environment soon after the disaster.
NIEHS gave more than $10 million to help train and protect workers during the disaster recovery and cleanup.
